In the summer of 2012, Brian began designing his junior thesis while living and working in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles. After an unexpected internship with an old friend, Gigi Burris of Gigi Burris Millinery, Brian decided to advance his millinery studies and include hats in his collection, inspired by his summertime experience living in the canyon. In the fall of 2012, Brian created five different black wool felt hats: a bowler, a boater (short and wide brim), and a fedora (wide brim and sloped brim).

When the demand to buy the hats became more pressing via social media, Brian founded SHADE + SLOUCH in the spring of 2013. The first collection, 1:1, consisted of the original five designs: The Alexandra Fedora, The Julia Slope Brim Fedora, The Elson Boater, The Emma Boater, and The Ashley Bowler. Since its creation, SHADE + SLOUCH has been worn internationally by customers from California to Thailand. Notable clients include: Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim of HAIM, Alisa Xayalith of The Naked and Famous, SZA of TDE, Malia James of Dum Dum Girls, Claire Acey of Nightmare and the Cat, Jesse Rutherford of The Neighbourhood, T. Mills, Molly Ringwald, Bradley Soileau, Omahyra Mota, Abby Brothers, the Durimel brothers, Bri Emery of designlovefest, L.A.-based label Made For Pearl, as well as various publications including NYLON Magazine, Bullett Magazine, iD Magazine, Galore Magazine, LiveFAST Magzine, and BlackBook Magazine. Brian opened his first wholesale account with Curio Los Angeles where the last hats of COLLECTION 1:1 were sold.
